As part of the renaissance of the East Boston water front, the end of an era has come. RDA Construction Corp. has commenced the demolition of the Hodge Boiler Works. Once employed to convert clipper ships from wind power to steam power, it ceased operations in the 1970s. The large cast iron boilers built in East Boston still are operated around town.
The demolition of the structures is making way for luxury condominiums, underground parking and a marina. These buildings were the former home of RDA and Sterling Equipment’s repair facility. Most recently the Hodge Boiler Works was used as a back drop for a new Martin Scorsese film, The Departed, The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Alec Baldwin. Located on Boston Harbor, the Hodge possesses some of the most beautiful views of the sky line to be had. The new building will be called DeNormandie Wharf.
